Carlania Celler is a family run cellar owned by husband-and-wife team Jordi Miró and Sònia Gomà-Camps. The winery is located in the Conca de Barberá D.O. in southern Catalonia, where both are natives. Jordi grew up working his family’s vineyards alongside his father and upon his father’s retirement, Jordi and Sònia returned home to their region and took over the farm. The local grape, Trepat, is mostly used to make rosé Cava but a small handful of producers are unlocking its potential to make fresh, lively reds. Being their unique local heritage, Trepat finds its way into all the wines they make, including the whites!
The couple got their start selling into the local co-op (the oldest in Spain, est. in 1847), but set up their own winery in 2007. Their 10 hectares of vineyards are all farmed biodynamically, and have been certified organic since 2008. As is typical of the region, the vineyards are a mix of espaldera and en vaso training systems and sit between 400 and 500 meters elevation. The soils are the noble calcareous-clay, and the vineyards are all dry-farmed and worked by hand. Most of their holdings are Trepat, along with some Macabeu and Parellada, with the parcels ranging from 15 to 110 years old.. They make their wines natural with no sulfur, no filtering and nothing added. Grape selection and harvesting is by hand in late September/early October. The wines are vinified in stainless steel, with their top wine Els Corrals, spending some time in old-fashioned chestnut barrels. A miniscule 25,000 bottles are produced each year.
