Cazas Novas is run by a three-man team at the family estate of Carlos Coutinho. He works in partnership with winemaker Diogo Lopes, and Vasco Magalhães who heads up the commercial department. Located at Santa Marinha do Zezere, north of the Douro, in the Baião sub district of the Vinho Verde, these vineyards are the 'last outpost' before entering the red wine producing region of the Douro's Baixo Corgo. Diogo Lopes started his career in 2004 with the master Anselmo Mendes, with whom he still collaborates today.
The fruit for these wines comes from Carlos’ 25-hectare estate, Quinta de Guimaraes. The vineyards are planted with Avesso, a late ripening but vigorous varietal that adds creaminess and minerality, as well as Loureiro, which adds floral notes to the wine, on mostly granitic soils. The wines are made at his facility in Melgaço, Minho, by Diogo. The vineyards are managed in sustainable agriculture, never using any preventative treatment. The winemaking is in a contemporary style, utilizing hand-harvested fruit and neutral yeast with as little SO2 as possible.
