Agri Segretum is a very special, organic farm set on 90 acres in the beautiful Tiber River Valley in Umbria, Italy in Collazzone, which is about a two hour drive from Florence or Rome. It’s important to note where owners Lorenzo de Monaco and Eileen Holland decided to set down roots—not in the more famous Montefalco area, but in the relatively new DOC of Todi , about twenty five kilometers to the southwest of Montefalco town. Lorenzo and Eileen left their city lives with a belief in the terroir of their beautiful estate, in the heart of the Todi DOC. Together with their local community they started planting vines in 2008, focusing on the indigenous varieties typical of their region to stay true to the land—Sangrantino, Sangiovese, Malvasia nera and Grechetto.
Agri Segretum’s production is miniscule, at only about 2,800 cases annually. They put great time and focus into their process. From the selection of indigenous grape varieities, to hand-harvesting and relying on only spontaneous fermentations on native yeasts and only manual work in the cellar, Lorenzo and Eileen strive for a more more natural, authentic expression of their land. Nothing is forced: if the wine needs a bit more time to naturally filter by gravity, they simply wait the time it takes. It is the vine or the wine that dictates their timing. The wines take their names from Umbrian vernacular: Cinino, “the little one”, Pottarello, “little kid”, Marmocchio “rascal”, and Freghino, “teenager”. Their passion for the land, their sense of whimsy lead us to fall head over heels for these special wines and people.
