Alberto Longo’s family began cultivating vineyards amid olive groves in the countryside of San Severo and Pietramontecorvino on the hills of northern Daunia in Puglia. As a child in the 1960s, this is where his lifelong passion for winemaking began, and he was able to establish his eponymous winery in 2000.
His winery is based in the town of Lucera, in a restored 19th century farmhouse. Alberto Longo is dedicated to sustainability not only in the (certified organic) vineyards, but also in the cellar. They utilize a large network of geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, and alternative sources of energy whenever possible. These current environmentally-friendly practices seamlessly blend with decades of winemaking skill and experience, for the production of elegant, thoughtful, and finesse-driven wines.
Alberto Longo farms 23 hectares of vine near the ancient city of Lucera, with an emphasis on plantings in the DOP Cacc’e Mmitte di Lucera. This is one of the smallest DOPs in all of Italy, and only 5 producers have holdings in the vineyard. All of Longo’s grapes are strictly selected and hand-harvested in order to maintain the correct sugar and acidity levels in an area that can become very hot, despite the cooling Balkan breezes. Biodiversity is encouraged and supported, and only organic products are used in the vineyards and on the surrounding farms.
Wines produced from Puglian grapes such as Nero di Troia, Primitivo, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Falanghina, Bombino Bianco and others are pristine representations of Italy’s Adriatic coast, with expressive, fruit-forward characteristics and savory, earth-driven palates.
