Founded in 2012 by Jason Barrett, Black Button Distilling is Rochester, New York’s first grain-to-glass distillery since Prohibition. Jason's family ran a successful button manufacturing business, but being colorblind meant he couldn’t follow in their footsteps. Instead, he turned his passion for craftsmanship to distilling, creating Black Button Distilling as a tribute to the art of precision and family history.
Black Button Distlling’s core values include resourcefulness, innovation, integrity and sustainability. As the preeminent distiller of Bourbon in New York state, their ‘Rochester Style’ is defined by the specific ingredients, climate, equipment and process. Recognizing the importance of both column stills (efficiency and uniformity) and pot stills (unique character and flavor) in spirits-making, Master Distiller Jason Barrett custom-designed a 'Column to Pot to Column’ system. Along with a Double Pass Distillation, Black Button’s efforts capture the essence of upstate New York. All their products are certified Kosher.
Each spirit is a labor of love, crafted with local ingredients sourced from farms within a 50-mile radius. Heirloom grains come from Edgewood Farm in Groveland, NY and 100% of the distillery’s water is sourced from Hemlock Lake - both in the Finger Lakes region. Their signature Four Grain Bourbon is aged in American White Oak barrels from the Adirondack Barrel Cooperage, offering aromas of toffee, leather and charred vanilla. While Black Button has a clear focus on Bourbon, they also produce gin, vodka, and specialized liqueurs! Their Citrus Forward Gin delivers flavors or rich and juicy orange as a perfect counterpart to New York State Cascade hops and Juniper.
Jason's commitment to quality and his hometown roots are what set Black Button apart, making it a staple of Rochester’s craft spirit scene.
