Founded in 1970 by Luis Casado, Bodegas Loli Casado is a small family owned and operated winery in Rioja Alavesa that is as traditional as they come. They farm 25 hectares of their own estate vines 425-500 meters above sea level of varying ages; 9 hectares over 70 years old, 12 ha between 30 and 45 years old and 4 hectares of newly planted vines younger than 10 years old. In 2000, upon Luis’s retirement, the estate was taken over by his daughter Loli. While adapting their traditional Bodega to modern times, using a mix of French and American oak and a smattering of modern equipment like stainless steel tanks, they have continued to produce wines that retain the essence of old Rioja.

Historically, the Rioja wine industry has been dominated by wineries and co-operatives that bought grapes from the thousands of land owner to make their wine. This approach along with long oak ageing, another traditional hallmark of Rioja wines, yielded wines of style and not necessarily wines of terroir. There are relatively fewer estates like Bodegas Loli Casado, which own and farm their own vines, making their own wine from their own terroirs. Loli and her team aim to make wines that are both wines of style and wines of terroir, embracing traditional styles and oak ageing but also showcasing the unique fruit from their own vineyards.
