Cantine Sant’Agata can be traced to humble beginnings. In the 1960s when young couples were leaving the countryside en mass, the parents of owner Franco Cavallero recognized the beauty and potential of their land and decided to stay. The goal was to simply make a modest living, bottling their own wine and selling it to friends and neighbors. It was here in the town of Scurzolengo that a young Franco began to understand his family’s land intimately; studying the soil and in awe of what the vineyards could produce.

In the 1990s, Franco and his brother Claudio took ownership of the winery, naming it after a votive pillar of Sant’Agata that was placed in front of their home. Unlike their parents, the brothers had aspirations of selling their wine on a global scale, and have had success many times over, often being considered a leading authority on the Ruché grape.

On the left bank of the Tanaro River, the vineyards stand in what was once an abundant chestnut forest. It is a UNESCO recognized site, where Sant’Agata’s Ruché plantings benefit from warming sunshine with a southern exposure, allowing the grapes to always achieve perfect ripeness. Worldwide production of Ruché is incredibly rare and limited, and at just over 2 hectares, Cavallero’s il Cavaliere vineyard is considered one of the largest in operation. These beautiful and unique wines, often described as having aromas of violet, rose, hay, and vanilla are soft and mellow, perhaps even a bit understated, calling back to their unassuming roots.
