The history of Destillerie Freihof begins 1885. It was originally established as a gasthaus, a traditional Alpine inn and restaurant by Gebhard Hämmerle. Gebhard’s gasthaus became popular with gourmets and freethinkers traveling through the market town of Lustenau. Gebhard began making distillates and developed Freihof into a full-blown distillery, devoting itself to the production of fruit brandies and Schnapps made with natural, local ingredients. In 1952 Gebhard Hämmerle’s grandson assumed management of the company. The younger Gebhard modernized the distillery, improved operations and brought it fully into the 20th century without compromising the traditional craftsmanship and soul of what continues to make Freihof so special.
Destillerie Freihof changed hands in 2015—only the third time since its founding—to Johann Drexel, who follows in his forefathers’ footsteps by sharing the same passion for exquisite fruit brandies and schnapps as well as liqueurs and other spirit specialties. A long-standing history of experience and knowledge guarantees excellence and outstanding products. Everything is exclusively made from natural ingredients that capture the delicate uniqueness of Mother Nature.
