In the early 1900s, Joseph Pascal settled in Puligny-Montrachet where he worked as a farmer and cultivator of land. He eventually met his wife Marie Voillery, and the couple went on to have two children, René and Jean, who would eventually join Joseph in winemaking.
Jean Pascal developed his winemaking skills at preeminent winery Domaine Leflaive, and in the early 1950s he and his wife Cécile were able to purchase plots of vine in Puligny-Montrachet. In 1975 Jean-Luc and his father Joseph began their own winery, acquiring 14 hectares of vineyards in the communes of Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Auxey-Duresses, and Volnay. From a very small parcel (less than .33 hectares), Domaine Joseph Pascal is the only winery that produces a red Puligny-Montrachet Village!
Today the estate is helmed by the family’s fourth generation Alexandra Pascal, a woman of great intelligence and versatility. Working with vineyards planted from 1950 to 1980, she practices sustainable viticulture with minimal intervention during winemaking. In addition to overseeing production of the winery, she manages a nursery dedicated to growing young vines. Furthermore, she is the Mayor of Puligny-Montrachet, a befitting post due to her dedication to the proliferation of the region - while keeping with tradition - of making elegant wines from highly regarded sites in Burgundy.
