The Tortochot name has been associated with the vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin as far back as records go, renowned for crafting wines of remarkable quality. The estate gained traction in the early 1900s, with prominent Burgundian winemaker Gabriel Tortochot at the helm. Knowledgeable to say the least, he was the president of the Gevrey-Chambertin winegrowers union and an influential member of the INAO committee.
Today, Chantal Tortochot, the fourth-generation vintner and daughter of Gabriel Tortochot, leads the domaine. Working with 11 hectares of estate fruit, she describes their Pinot Noir style as expressive and traditional, emphasizing abundant fruit, elegant tannins, and lively acidity.
The estate has been certified organic since 2008, and uses only products of natural origin for treatment and work in the vineyards; a process that allows for showcasing purity of fruit character. The grapes are 100% destemmed, and oak barrels are of medium toast, so as to accent the wines rather than dominate. Grand Crus are aged with 100% new oak; 1er Cru with 50% new oak; and Village wines 25% new oak. In addition, Chantal’s adept winemaking and attention to detail allows Domaine Tortochot to keep a large amount of library vintages. Her winemaking philosophy is to preserve the individual characteristics of each plot of vines, focusing on the singularity of Burgundian terroir.
These are wines of great elegance and minerality, where they excel at capturing the magical essence of Burgundy in every bottle.
