Domaine de Cardon is born of a long and storied history that began well over 900 years ago. The family originated in 12th century Spain, where they went by the surname Cardona. During the 15th century, descendants of the Cardona family settled in France and took an active role in defending the city of Lyon against the reformation. As a reward for their valiant efforts, King Henry IV granted them the barony of Sandrans in the Ain, a region near Lyon. Nearly 400 years later, the family moved north to Dracy-le-Fort in Burgundy where they planted their first vineyards. These original vineyards were unfortunately completely uprooted in the 20th century.

Acting on a desire to reignite family tradition, Frédérique de Cardon de Sandrans and her partner Thierry Bied returned to Lyon and established Domaine de Cardon. In 2013 they purchased 8 hectares of vines in the limestone and clay rich Côte Chalonnais, followed by 6 more hectares in 2015. The pair bottled their first vintage in 2016. They work sustainably and are certified by the French organization Terra Vitis, with minimal treatments applied to the vines to protect the environment and biodiversity of the vineyards. In the winery they vinify in stainless steel and age in minimal new French oak, to allow for maximum expression of fruit character.
