Pietro Beconcini is a small organic winery based in San Miniato, a small town lying in the province of Pisa, Tuscany. In medieval times, San Miniato was on the famed Via Francigena, which was the main connecting route between northern Europe and Rome. As a result, San Miniato was regularly exposed to a constant flow of trade from around the continent and beyond.
Leonardo Beconcini inherited the estate from his grandfather Pietro, who in the early 1950’s was the first sharecropper in Tuscany who was able to purchase the land he had been working for years. At the time, the farm was replete with grains, beans, grape vines, olive trees and forest. What started as a mixed agricultural farm, became a strictly enological endeavor. Leonardo is passionate about his local Sangiovese clones that he has been studying since the early 1990’s. Recently, after years of DNA testing, he has found old vines of Tempranillo as well, most likely brought by traders along the Via Francigena. He runs this certified organic estate with the crucial help of his wife, Eva.
Leonardo believes that the Sangiovese in San Miniato is particularly unique, due to the clay rich soils. Here, the grape shows smoother tannins and impressive balance, ideal qualities for Chianti.
