Located on the idyllic island of Sardegna, Silvio Carta began making wines from local varietals in the 1950’s, and by the 1970’s was distilling liqueurs, aperitifs, and vermouth for the local market. The distillery is especially well-known for their Mirto, a liqueur made from local myrtle berries. The recipe was created in 1939, during a particularly harsh winter, when the Carta family learned to stretch their food supply by conserving the berries in a spirit distilled from Vernaccia grapes. While the Silvio Carta line of liqueurs and spirits has expanded, the products are all still made with native botanicals and fruit.

In addition to their heralded spirits, the Carta family produces a curated collection of wines. Using indigenous varietals for these as well, they succeed in showcasing the terroir of Sardinian land and sea.

The business remains in the family, with Silvio’s son Elio Carta now running the distillery with his nephews. At 91 years old, Silvio still oversees the farming of the lemons and botanicals used to make the liqueurs and vermouths. Made only from local ingredients, these products are of the highest quality, but still channel the easy going Sardinian lifestyle.
