Viña  Undurraga Estates and Winery was founded in 1885 by Mr. Francisco Undurraga in the Maipo Valley, in the southwest outskirts of Santiago, Chile. The founder’s vision was to grow the best grapes possible to produce the best wines possible at affordable prices to supply initially the local market, but then also to offer his wines internationally. And indeed in 1903 Undurraga became the first “New World” wine to be imported into the United States. Eager for his wines to gain the respect of the wine cognoscenti of the time, he was a fierce ambassador for his wines and for the potential to make great wines in Chile. He sent his wines to participate in competitions across the Americas and in Europe, wining gold medals everywhere. At the core of Francisco Undurraga’s company was a drive to seek the latest in improvements in both farming and winemaking and also to better understand his terroirs. Over 135 years later, the founder’s values and philosophy of offering wines accessible to all continue to drive what Undurraga does. Francisco Undurraga was also steadfast in his love and stewardship of his land, and responsible farming remains a central value to the company today.

As Viña Undurraga has grown over the many years so has the drive to seek compelling terroirs, areas to grow vines that will yield wines of personality and a sense of place at affordable prices. Undurraga also stands out as one of the top sustainable wineries in the world, constantly seeking to reduce its carbon footprint with a rigorous plan to continue to diminish it in the near future. Undurraga believes that sustainability goes beyond merely farming and winemaking, most importantly into its full work force, placing an utmost importance on fairness and well-being. This is why since 2016 it has had the Wines of Chile sustainability certification, a code that guides wine companies in the challenge of working sustainably based on requirements in three complementary areas: the vineyard, the winery and bottling facilities and social responsibility. In addition, in 2022, Viña Undurraga has become a Silver Member of International Wineries for Climate Action. IWCA is a collaborative working group that brings together wineries committed to the environment and determined to take a scientific approach to reduce carbon emissions in the wine sector.

Undurraga’s recognition in all fronts is better shown by third parties, earning a position as one of the 30 most admired brands in the world (“World’s Most Admired Wine Brands” Top 50 ranking, UK Drinks International 2020), in addition to having been another 6 times in this ranking in the past. Two years in a row as one of the TOP 100 WINERIES of the world, by Wine & Spirits, 2021/2022.
