Johann Donabaum Offenberg Smaragd 2013

Wine Advocate: 94pts

Rich, ripe, precise and very elegant on the fascinating, multi-layered nose, the 2013 Riesling Smaragd Offenberg attracts with its herbal and stony flavors-especially the slate-terroir wine freaks amongst us. Grown on soils with inclusions of mica schist and paragneiss, this is a full-bodied, pure and salty wine on the palate. It is rich, precise and complex, as well as elegant and expressive, with a tension-filled finish and a persistent length. Still young, but with great aging potential, store this great Wachauer Riesling at least for another three or five years.

Wine & Spirits Maganzine: 93pts

From a vineyard rich in flinty silex at the cool western end of the Wachau, this is savory and mineral, a brothy umami character giving it textural fullness without adding weight. That feat allows it to come across as pretty, even delicate, with floral notes and spice adding a sense of lift and grace, the acidity adding kinetic energy.

International Wine Report: 92pts

The 2013 Offenberg Riesling is absolutely gorgeous, offering wonderful aromas of lychee, quince, honeycomb, slate, acacia flowers and hints of flinty stones. This is beautifully textured with excellent overall balance and focus. It finishes up precise with notes of ripe fruits and stony minerals lingering. Shows a bit more vibrancy than the Setzberg making this the more compelling of the two. (Best 2016-2026) - Apr, 2016 (JD)

Wine Spectator: 92pts

Rich and well-crafted, with notes of orange zest to the peach cobbler, pastry and apple tart flavors. Chamomile and dried savory notes in the midpalate, and a finish that lingers with toasty accents. Drink now through 2021. 250 cases made.
